SAT Math Myths
1. "The SAT Math tests on advanced math."
I know kids who take AP Calculus, a class only accelerated students can take, can't score over a 700 on the SAT Math.
I am taking Precalculus, yet I have the highest SAT Math score in the world (tied with a bunch of other perfect scorers).
And you don't need AP Calculus nor Precalculus to ace the SAT Math.
SAT Math looks advanced, but that's because the test twists basic math concepts into puzzles. Arithmetic, Algebra , Geometry, and (not AP) Statistics are the only math concepts you need to ace the SAT.
2. "If I do well in school math, I can do well on the SAT Math."
Again, I know a bunch of kids at school who get As (90s) in their math classes, and yet they can't score over a 700.
School math is really straightforward. If you know the basic material, you can get the questions right.
The SAT Math, isn't straightforward. Most of the questions are designed to "trick" you, thus making you choose the incorrect answer.
However, that doesn't mean you won't do well on SAT Math. You might find the SAT Math rather easy. But what you do have to realize is that a 100 in a math class, doesn't grant you a high SAT Math score.
3. "I can't do well on the SAT without taking a prep course."
I achieved my 800 SAT Math score by working with the Blue Book (College Board SAT book), Princeton Review SAT Book, YouTube, College Confidential, and a bunch of other useful online sources.
So I think we all know that prep courses are unnecessary to score an 800. Of course, prep classes can help you, but they aren't essential.
